FD&D (Freight, Demurrage, and Defense) insurance is a specialized form of coverage designed for shipowners, operators, and charterers. It protects against three key areas of risk in maritime operations:
This covers the risk of non-payment or disputes related to freight, ensuring that the carrier receives payment or avoids having to pay for the (non)transportation of goods as per the terms of the contract.
This covers legal costs and expenses associated to the liquidated damages a shipowner or charterer may claim or defend for delays incurred in the loading port(s) or at the discharge port(s) beyond the agreed time.
This covers legal costs and expenses associated with defending or pursuing claims related to a wide variety of shipping disputes that may arise during operations.
FD&D insurance provides a comprehensive safety net for parties involved in shipping, assisting to mitigate financial losses from disputes but covering solely the costs of legal defense including your opponents costs in case of an unexpected negative outcome. .
